Ziontific Summer Solstice Music Festival Lineup - The Expanders

Ziontific 7 Artist – The Expanders

For more than a decade, U.S. reggae artists have been building a foundation from the Hawaiian islands to the east coast. This new generation of reggae artists continues to reach new heights of success with album and ticket sales, as well as winning over fans worldwide. While most modern American reggae bands are rooted in the rock reggae style, there are a few U.S. artists championing the lineage of classic roots reggae traditions, and Los Angeles-based vintage reggae revivalists The Expanders are leading that charge, building their sound around classic 70’s and early 80’s style reggae, with three part vocal harmonies, conscious songwriting, and an indie-DIY spirit.

The five-piece band comprised of John Asher (Drums, Vocals), John Butcher (Guitar, Vocals), Roy Fishell (Organs), Chiquis Lozoya (Bass, Vocals), and Devin Morrison (Guitar, Vocals) have been making reggae fans and critics take note with their refreshing sound that references the “golden era” of reggae. Morrison and Butcher grew up listening to the record collection of famed reggae archivist Roger Steffens, and credit much of their love and knowledge to the accessibility and education of those experiences. Becoming friends with Steffens’ son, they developed an obsession with exploring the deepest reaches of the genre. The Expanders’ new album Hustling Culture was released June 16, 2015, on indie tastemaker label Easy Star Records. Hustling Culture is the band’s third studio album, but for the band members feels like their first proper album as a cohesive unit. Asher explains, “Our first album was a collection of music from good friends making a record together. Our second album was a great covers album, but Hustling Culture is the band coming into its own with our songwriting and musicianship.” Morrison adds, “For this album we spent more time prepping and rehearsing, giving us more confidence in the recording studio. The result made the process more fun and enjoyable as we approached the songwriting in a more organized way and explored a wider range of topics than on the first album. Our combined efforts really shine through and all the musicians really stepped up and gave an inspired effort on the whole record.” In addition to the core members, their extended family includes keyboardist Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites and Rivas Recordings. Rivas has been an integral part of The Expanders’ recordings and helped maintain and produce the authentic sounds, which shine through on all the band’s releases.

Hustling Culture was recorded entirely on analogue tape at Killion Sound in North Hollywood, CA, from 20122014. The studio is a favorite recording place for the band because it’s run by Sergio Rios (Orgone), a friend who understands their unique aesthetic and has the gear to capture it, giving the album a warm and colorful palette.

The album title, Hustling Culture comes from the album’s opening line: “One dollar gone but the next soon come, we never stop from hustling culture.” Morrison explains, “Everyone has a hustle, and ours is roots & culture music. It’s a way of reminding ourselves that outside of just entertaining and financial gain, there is a bigger picture and larger purpose for writing about the topics and playing the style of roots reggae that we do.” The Expanders’ music is a reminder that reggae music wasn’t born in a tropical beach paradise, but in the impoverished and underprivileged areas of Jamaica, resulting in a passionate expression for human rights, social justice and freedom from oppression.

There is a subtle, yet powerful conscious thread woven throughout Hustling Culture. “ Uptown Set,” for example, is about the hidden effects of our country’s party lifestyle, which brings suffering and misery to innocent poor people caught along the routes where party drugs come across the border. “Thanks For Life” is a dedication to women, the struggle they face every day, and the debt of life that we all owe to them. “Top Shelf” is a tribute to the ganja farmers and the reflection of the changing cultural views on marijuana.

The band is part of a burgeoning Los Angeles reggae scene that sprang in large part from The Blue Beat Lounge (the longest running weekly ska night that happened at the Knitting Factory) and LA’s longtime premier weekly reggae night Dub Club held at the Echoplex. A song that was inspired by a key member of that scene is “Reggae Pops,” an infectious instrumental tune laid over a “steppers riddim” featuring John Butcher on lead guitar and Dan Hastie from Orgone on clarinet. The title was chosen as a tribute to the late-great Reggae Pops (born Nemencio Jose Andujar) who was a pillar of the Southern California reggae community for decades. Morrison states, “It’s impossible to accurately describe what he meant to reggae music in Los Angeles, but those who remember him from shows will never forget him. He was a dancer, a fan, and a presence that was always felt. He was the man!”

The Expanders are on tour now supporting the release. Morrison concludes, “Our goal is to bring that vintage reggae feel and sound that we love to places where people might not get to hear it on a regular basis.”

Ziontific 7 Artist – DJ Benny Black

IN THE SILENT DISCO . . .

Benny Black is a multi-dimensional artist with a serious focus on the creative and business oriented aspects of today’s music industry.

From a very young age, Benny Black had a strong interest in creating music. As hip hop began to spread throughout the tri-state area, he was exposed early to the new culture by hearing songs like “Rapper’s Delight” and “Planet Rock” on the radio and on tapes. A new concept in television would cause his interest to peak. Run DMC’s “King of Rock” video influenced him for years to come. He was fascinated by the art of MCing and DJing. The straight forward yet witty lyrics combined with hard, gritty beats and aggressive attitude was adopted and imitated by a young Benny Black.

Benny continued to write rhymes and record music throughout his life. With too many successful releases to even count, Benny Black has been busy diversifying his passion. From mixtape to mixtape and a combination beat tape/mixtape to a hip hop instrumental album to Djing for Tableek and The Political Animals to working as the Urban Music Director on the radio, starting a record label, writting a few books, and continues to further advance his career as a DJ/Producer.

Ziontific Summer Solstice Music Festival Lineup - Tyrone Shoelaces

Ziontific 7 Artist – Tyrone Shoelaces

Tyrone Shoelace’s music was recently described as a “wild and sexy eclectic mix of reggae, funk and groovin rhythms that surge ones soul. The band is a talented mesh or cross-section of musicians from various decades that communicate well together and learn from each other to add to this band’s success. There’s a positive interplay among the artists. The music at first had an almost funk reggae feel which then suddenly loomed into an explosion of energy with an experimental, trendy, edgy flare with its techno/synthesizer sound that surges excitement and spirit to the listener.”  Annette Versage – Fairfield County Music Reporter

Since the band’s inception, Tyrone’s sound has continued to evolve into a wild mix of genres – rock, reggae, dub, funk, jam band and even some disco-esque rhythms – culminating in the third CD/Album, Shoot The Radio being released in March of 2016.

Written, recorded and mixed entirely in Norwalk CT, Shoot The Radio takes on a Norwalk feel with a reference to Sheffield Island on In The Garden and the song I Didn’t Notice which is about growing up on Lexington Ave in South Norwalk.  Proud to put Norwalk, CT on the map, the album features a rap by Norwalk native Leo TheFuture Futerelli and was mixed by three-time Grammy winner & Norwalk resident Phil Magnotti.  The album cover was created by another Norwalker, Dave Lindsay of Lindsay Media.  This record truly captures Tyrone’s ever evolving sound and mash up of genres. It has a much more reggae feel and incorporates some electronica dub for the first time.

The title song, Shoot The Radio has a simple reggae shuffle beat which then morphs into a rap featuring Leo TheFuture Futerelli and his take on growing up with the radio. The first single, In The Garden was released on February 12, 2016 and the full album was released on March 4, 2016 with the sterling efforts of Rabbit House Records. Since then the album has been spinning on 99.5 WPLR Newhaven, 89.5 WPKN Bridgeport as well as CIgnet and multiple I Heart Radio Stations!

Ziontific 7 Artist – DJ Live!

IN THE SILENT DISCO . . .

Nicholas (Live!) Court was born in Western Massachusetts and by the age of 8 moved to Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay area with his mother, stepfather, and brother. He and his brother were raised between parts of Virginia Beach/ Norfolk, and Brooklyn, New York where his biological father lived. Growing up in the tip of the south traveling back and forth to New York’s Pen Station or Port Authority is where the inspiration for this producer extraordinaire’s years of original and ground breaking urban production were developed.

With years also spent in one of the west coasts most musically influential areas experiencing San Francisco’s mission districts then heavy poverty and gang activity was a complete opposite view from either of the not so easy walks of life he was a custom to in the east coast. This life experience is what has created his diverse ear for music and his “Hard Work No Play” ethics that set this producer ahead of the rest. Live! Has produced for hundreds of hip hop, R&B, and reggae artists including: Buckshot of Black moon, Moke&Tone, Grafh, Slash of unusual suspects, Block McCloud of Brooklyn academy, Roosta & Prowla of Fear Nuttin Band, Stash, Rap-p feat Ty Nitty of infamous mobb, Tony benefit of Earatic Statik, all of Hardtimes Records artist roster 2001-2012, Nature, C-Rayz Walz, Vorheez, Hostyle of Screwball, Young Dirty Bastard, Whosane, the whole Comparable To None Entertainment Roster 2002-2009 and much more.

One of his most recent projects, a collaboration with Albe Back and 2dopeboyz.com titled Raphael Dela Ghetto in which he Produced all but two track’s was well received with over 10,000 Downloads and numerous blog mention’s. Plan to see, but most of all hear a lot from him in the near future.
